Bedford Hospital NHS Trust is a 403 bed, high performing acute district general hospital committed to providing a caring and safe environment for our patients and staff. We provide a range of services to over 270,000 people living predominantly in north and mid Bedfordshire and are the vascular hub for the county.

 Our services are delivered mainly from one site at Bedford Hospital South Wing and are managed and delivered by three clinical divisions: Medicine and Diagnostics , Surgery and Anesthetics, Women’s and Children’s Services. Bedford Hospital has over 2000 members of staff and a current turnover of approximately £121.2million. The hospital enjoys strong community support with over 200 volunteers at the Trust and over £6 million being raised by the independent Bedford Hospital’s Charity over the past 10 years. The fantastic support from the hospital charity has enabled us to be able to build a dedicated cancer centre, the Primrose Unit, Cygnet Wing, the hub for our Women’s and Children’s services and the charity are currently raising money to refurbish our birthing suite and build a new birthing pool.

The Trust’s ethos is ‘every patient matters’, our vision is to provide patient focused high quality acute hospital care to meet the needs of our local community and we are constantly working with our staff to find new ways of working to ensure that our vision is achieved.

New Developments

Bedford Hospital is currently mid way through the Foundation Trust application process. Becoming a Foundation Trust will mean that Bedford Hospital will gain freedom from central government control and instead will become accountable to our staff, our patients and our local community. Our planned capital spend over the next five years is £38.5 million and we will be investing in a number of service developments to respond to the changing needs of our local community.

  • Recent developments include:
  • A bowel cancer screening centre
  • Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Services
  • New vascular services including Endovascular aortic repair
  • A refurbished delivery suite and additional birthing pool funded by the Bedford Hospitals Charity

We are also planning future developments in orthopaedic, stroke and radiology services.
